about

BECCA:
Every time we play this song I so vividly picture the scene that Rebecca paints below. I see Jeff Buckley playing and can almost hear him too, partly because Rebecca's tune really channels the energy and the color of his music.

REBECCA:
Sweetheart is a song that I wrote nearly 20 years ago, about Jeff Buckley after he passed. I used to play with him every Monday night at S-ine Cafe in NYC with my band Once Blue. Losing him so suddenly was a terrible shock to our musical community. I have fond memories of his solo shows, and how the audience hung on his every note. The lyric is a true combination of what I saw, and how we all felt. I have tried to record this numerous times over the years, but I was never satisfied with the performance. It makes me very happy that Gretchen and Becca felt a connection to it. I love what we did and am so happy to finally share this song with the world. This tune is a play on words based on Jeff's record "Sketches for My Sweetheart the Drunk". There wasn't a soul back then who didn't imagine or wish that he was speaking about them. His music and persona at that time was magic. Gretchen's part "Maybe the next time around, you and I will see each other again" was me back then. Her beautiful voice and interpretation personifies how I felt.

GRETCHEN:
This is another rebecca classic, she has such a rich history and i love the story behind the song. This song features larry grenadier on bass and mark guiliana on drums, they add such texture and depth to the piece. i feel lucky that rebecca shared this song with us and its quickly become a distinctive song for us.

lyrics

SWEETHEART
Rebecca Martin

I dreamt of you last night
All nestled up inside my head
There you are again

With the ones who’d come out to see you
To hear the songs you’d sing
Sitting pretty and ladylike
Pretending to be full but aching for more.

What’s the use to sit around and moan
Or long to be close to someone I’ve never known

I was one who’d come out to see you
To hear the songs you’d sing
Sitting pretty and lady like
Pretending to be full but aching for more

Wanting to be the drunk sweetheart

Maybe the next time around you and I
Will see each other again.
